Well, well… who would have though that I am going to see Incubus in Thailand. But yes, last weekend we headed for the Silverlake Music festival, the first rock festival on this scale ever in the whole of Thailand. The first weekend I didn’t have to attend uni and the perfect opportunity to breeze different air then the polluted city dazzle. After Friday night in one of Bangkok’s fanciest clubs attending a Rihanna tribute party (Trasher event at Narz) with lots of gays and girls dressed up as their idols look-alike, on Saturday midday we took a bus to Pattaya. The town has a reputation for its sex industry with a wild party scene especially around the famous “Walking Street”. Getting out of the bus we passed through a scenery of hundreds of big-bellied white haired man and their accompanying Thai partners until reaching our guesthouse where we again seemed to be the only white female guests. The festival venue was a 30 minutes ride out of town. The whole set up and organization for the 30.000 people was impressive considering everything else that I have seen so far in Thailand and festivals I have visited in Europe. A plain cut field surrounded by scenic mountains, numerous parking guides, songthaews (open pick up trucks with two benches in the back) bringing visitors around the venue, hundreds of staff attending to all needs and in general everything ran smoothly without any waiting delays. The concerts were pretty good and you can get a taste of it with the samples below. I have been missing good hand made music with a more alternative crowd in Bangkok and now finally got a feel for Thailand’s rock scene. The always-mandatory high heels on girls were finally taken off, the sweat deteriorated the make up and people were dancing in the mud. One highlight of the night was Brandon Boyd, lead-vocalist of Incubus and the other was our ride back to the car. Due to all guests wanting to return home at the same time there was a songthaew overload and one guy decided to get on a fire truck. Instead of throwing him off, the driver volunteered to give everyone a ride. About 50 people hopped on top of the vehicle and rumbled back to the main road.
Sunday the girls and me lazed on the chair fringed over packed beach busying ourselves with getting henna tattoos (I tried the corner behind my hear and might get one for real) and people watching. Great weekend!
Incubus – Drive (you tube) (an all-time favourite) Lead singer Brandon Boyd: "The lyric is basically about fear, about being driven all your life by it and making decisions from fear. It's about imagining what life would be like if you didn't live it that way."
Owl City – Fireflies (you tube)
Seether – Broken (you tube)
